Jets claim four off of waivers, including former Giants TE Will Tye

The Jets addressed some weak spots Sunday, as they finalized their roster with waiver claims and cuts as they get ready for the regular season.

New York Giants tight end Will Tye completes a pass during day two of minicamp in East Rutherford, NJ on Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

The Jets claimed four players, cut four players and named four players to their practice squad.

The newest Jets are former Giants tight end Will Tye, kick returner/wide receiver Kalif Raymond, wide receiver Damore'ea Stringfellow, and linebacker Edmond Robinson.

The Jets released veteran linebacker Bruce Carter, and waived running back/kick returner Marcus Murphy, tight end Jason Vander Laan and outside linebacker Freddie Bishop.

The move to pick-up Tye was the most-high profile of the day, and the most sensible. The Jets didn't have a single proven tight end on their roster for the first two weeks as Austin Seferian-Jenkins serves a two-game suspension. Tye, who played two seasons with the Giants, provides much-needed depth.

Tye started 10 games for the Giants in 2016 and had 48 catches for 495 yards and a touchdown. He had three touchdowns and 464 yards receiving on 42 catches as a rookie in 2015. Now he'll join a Jets' offense that is putting a greater emphasis on the tight end under new offensive coordinator, John Morton.

The Jets currently have three tight ends on their roster: rookie Jordan Leggett, Eric Tomlinson and Tye. Tomlinson's job could be in jeopardy when Seferian-Jenkins returns from suspension. Vander Laan couldn't overcome a shoulder injury he suffered in training camp.

Broncos wide receiver Kalif Raymond (19) makes a catch at Nissan Stadium Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016, in Nashville, Tenn.

Raymond, who went undrafted out of Holy Cross in 2016, will likely be the Jets' kick returner in Week 1. He averaged 22.8 yards per kick return (six returns) for the Broncos last season and 10.1 yards per punt return (11 returns) in four games. But he also had two fumbles, both in the same day. When the Jets claimed Raymond it made Murphy, who returned kicks for the Jets in the third preseason game, expendable.

Jets' cut day: Analyzing the Jets' initial 53-man roster

Local in NFL: Ridgewood's Koo named Chargers' starting kicker

Jets' most important players:No. 8, OLB Jordan Jenkins

Stringfellow is an undrafted rookie free agent out of Mississippi who failed to make the Dolphins. The 6-2, 211-pound receiver had 46 catches for 716 yards and six touchdowns as a junior at Ole Miss last year. He'll likely get some opportunities in the Jets' offense. The Jets decided to cut two linebackers rather than waive Charone Peake, their seventh-round pick in 2016, who has not made much of an impression.

Robinson, an outside linebacker selected by the Vikings in the seventh round of the 2015 draft, has played almost exclusively on special teams through his first two seasons. But got plenty of action at linebacker during the preseason for the Vikings, making at least two tackles in every game. He also had two passes defended.

With the decision to add Robinson, Lorenzo Mauldin's spot in the roster seemed in jeopardy. But instead, the Jets cut Bishop and Carter.

There's still a chance to Jets could put Mauldin, their third-round pick in 2015, on injured reserve.

Mauldin missed the entire preseason with a back injury. And depending on the severity of it, he could be a candidate for short-term IR. The NFL allows teams to bring two players back from injured reserve using the short-term designation, provided the players were on the initial 53-man roster. Players on short-term IR can return to practice after Week 6 and return to games after Week 8. Teams don't have to decide in advance who they want to use their short-term designation on.

None of the Jets players who were released over the weekend were claimed. Lucky Whitehead, the only Jet waived with an injury designation, cleared waivers and will revert to the team's injured reserve. Because Whitehead wasn't on the initial 53-man roster, he is not eligible to return to the Jets later this season via short-term IR. Once Whitehead gets healthy -- his broken foot was not expected to end his season -- the Jets must release him from IR and he can go play for another team.
