The top 5 players Cowboys regret passing on in 2014 draft, including two Pro Bowl DBs

Editor's note: This story has been updated.

The Cowboys, like everyone else, live with regret. We take a look at the players they probably wish they hadn't passed on in recent drafts. Here is the 2014 edition of lament:

5. Adrian Phillips, S  -- Texas

The Cowboys were ridiculously successful in the first two rounds of this draft, landing Zack Martin and then trading up to get DeMarcus Lawrence. You can't do much better than that. The regrets here are minor. Phillips, a Dallas native, was released and re-signed several times during his rookie season before eventually landing a regular role. He has played in all but three games over the last three seasons, starting 17. Phillips made his first Pro Bowl last season. Dallas drafted a safety in the seventh round in 2014, Baylor's Ahmad Dixon, who never played in a game for the Cowboys.

4. Malcolm Butler, CB -- West Alabama

Undrafted. Signed with the New England Patriots.

Butler, who is now with the Titans, spent four years in New England. He started all but one game during his final three seasons with the Patriots. Butler, who won two Super Bowl rings in New England, made the play of the game in Super Bowl XLIX, intercepting Seattle's Russell Wilson at the goal line in the final minute. Butler made the Pro Bowl in 2015 and was second-team All-Pro in 2016. The Cowboys drafted cornerback Terrance Mitchell with their final seventh round pick in 2014. Mitchell, who played in three games with the Cowboys, has spent his last two seasons in Cleveland and Kansas City. He has six career interceptions and 33 pass deflections. Over the last four seasons, Butler has 11 interceptions and 56 pass deflections.

3. Andrew Norwell, OG -- Ohio State

Undrafted. Signed with the Carolina Panthers.

Norwell made an immediate impact in Carolina, starting nine games his rookie year. He then started 45 games over the next three seasons. In March 2018, Norwell signed a five-year, $66.5 million contract with the Jaguars that made him the NFL's highest-paid guard. Zack Martin eventually topped that deal three months later. Had the Cowboys used one of their five seventh-round picks on Norwell, he could've battled with Ron Leary for the starting left guard spot, and at the very least, provided incredible depth to an already stacked offensive line.

2. Charles Leno, OT -- Boise State

Pick 246 overall by the Chicago Bears.

It's no secret that the Cowboys love their Boise State players. Leno could've been a good fit to takeover for Doug Free at right tackle when Free retired after the 2016 season. Leno has started every game for the Bears over the last three years. He was a Pro Bowl alternate this past season. Leno signed a four-year, $37 million contract extension with the Bears in 2017. Dallas selected Stanford DE Ben Gardner and Texas Tech LB Will Smith ahead of Leno in the seventh round.

1. Telvin Smith, LB -- Florida State

Pick 144 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Cowboys were looking for a play-making linebacker in the fourth round and selected Anthony Hitchens. Twenty-five picks later, Jacksonville grabbed a player that turned out to be one of the league's top linebackers. Smith, who made the Pro Bowl and was named second-team All-Pro in 2017, has 586 tackles over the last five seasons. He also has nine interceptions, 7.5 sacks and five forced fumbles. While Hitchens was solid for the Cowboys before he signed with Kansas City, he was not Smith. Had the Cowboys drafted the former FSU standout, he'd still be starting in Dallas.
