New York Giants’ Kadarius Toney Lands On Reserve/Covid List

This article is more than 2 years old.

The New York Giants don’t officially open training camp until July 27, but with their rookies, quarterbacks, injured, and first-year players having already reported to East Rutherford, the team did a little housekeeping following the conclusion of physical exams.

Receiver Kadarius Toney, the Giants’ first-round draft pick, was placed on the reserve/COVID-19, the team announced. ESPN’s Field Yates reported that Toney had a positive COVID-19 test.

This means Toney, whose NFL career has gotten off to a bumpy start that’s included equipment issues and a family emergency (both of which caused him to miss practice time in the spring), could be looking at missing anywhere from four to seven training camp practices, depending on his recovery time and the length of stay in the league’s COVID protocol.

In other Giants news, the team placed six players on the Active/PUP list, including running back Saquon Barkley and tight end Kyle Rudolph.

Barkley is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 2 of last year that required reconstructive surgery.

Rudolph is recovering from the off-season foot surgery that he had in March after Giants team doctors discovered a foot ailment from last season hadn’t properly healed.

The others placed on Active/PUP include reserve offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison (hamstring), tackle Matt Peart (back), linebacker Oshane Ximines (hamstring), and cornerback Aaron Robinson (core muscle).

Peart’s injury is one to watch. The second-year offensive lineman out of UConn is projected to be the team’s starting right tackle this season. If he can’t go, veteran Nate Solder, who is returning after opting out last year, would be the next man up.

Robinson’s is also one to keep an eye on, as the Giants' third-round draft pick was projected to challenge for playing time in the slot, a spot currently held by Darnay Holmes.

Robinson was also projected to see some snaps as the team’s STAR linebacker, a hybrid linebacker/safety role usually deployed in coverage.

Ximines missed most of last season with a shoulder injury suffered in Week 4 that required season-ending surgery.

A third-round pick in 2019, Ximines has shown flashes of being a quick-footed pass rusher but has struggled against the run. This latest setback certainly doesn’t help him moving forward since hamstring injuries can take a lot of time to heal.

The Giants also announced they placed outside linebacker Ryan Anderson (back) and running back Sandro Platzgummer (hamstring) on the reserve/non-football injury list.

As is the case with those on the Active/PUP list, if those players can pass a physical before the final roster cuts are made, they would be instantly eligible to join the training camp roster.

Finally, the Giants placed running back Taquan Mizzell (hamstring) on injured reserve. The Giants, who on Wednesday signed running back Mike Weber and defensive back Jordyn Peters, needed a roster spot to accommodate both new players. Hence, the transaction involving Mizzell accomplished that.

The Giants officially open training camp on July 27 in East Rutherford.
