Hornets tame Wildcats 41 – 13

The Hornets tamed the Wildcats 41-13 to claim their second 2A District 3 win of the season. Metcalfe County High School takes on their longtime rival and district opponent, the Monroe County Falcons next.

Prior to the victory over the Wildcats, MCHS defeated Clinton County 34-6 adjusting to the loss of 4-year starter at quarterback, Peyton Dial, due to injury.

Metcalfe County improves to 4-2 on the season after their victory over Edmonson County. The Wildcats fall to 0-6 on the season with two of the losses due to the KHSAA COVID cancellation policy.

Coach LJ Harbison and the Hornets will take a week off from district play when they travel to Adair County after the Monroe game. The Hornets will return to district play when they host Green County on October 22, their final regular season district contest. The Dragons defeated 3A perennial powerhouse Taylor County 36-19 earlier in the season. Green County is 2-0 in 2A District 3 and 5-0 overall potentially setting up a top seed matchup between the Hornets and the Dragons. Green County will play Edmonson County the week before their district game against Metcalfe.

After the Wildcat’s loss to the Hornets, ECHS traveled to Clinton County, then hosted Green County before ending their district season at home against Monroe. The Wildcats final regular season game will be on the road on Oct 29, against Breckinridge County.

In the Hornets’ win over the Wildcats, Mason Estes was 8 of 11 for 100 yards and 4 touchdowns. Wyatt Blythe had 6 catches for 77 yards and 3 TD’s, and Blythe also had an interception. Rudy Wisdom caught a 19-yard TD pass.

Michael Bennett led the Hornets in rushing with 9 carries for 103 yards and 1 TD. Charles Branstetter had 7 carries for 72 yards and 1 touchdown. Estes had 40 yards on 7 carries and Michael Finley rushed 9 times for 20 yards. Dakota Shaw was 5 of 6 o each on PAT kicks.

Bennett, Jessie Tanner, and Chris Shaw all recovered a fumble and had 3 solo tackles each. Shaw also had a sack. Leading the defense was Luke Meadows with 6 solo tackles.

Edmonson had 138 yards rushing against Metcalfe. The Wildcats only had 2 pass completions on 3 attempts for negative 3 yards.

Michael Mills led the Wildcat’s rushing attack with 17 carries for 80 yards and a TD. Zander Bass had 3 carries for 70 yards and a score. Owen Still was 1 of 2 on PAT attempts.

Bass led the defense with 7 solo tackles. Gage Abney and Jaxon Daugherty both had 3 solos stops, and Logan Davis had a tackle for a loss.

In Metcalfe’s win over Clinton, Estes was 9 of 13 for 115 yards in the air with 1 TD pass. Blythe had 5 receptions for 78 yards and a TD.

Branstetter rushed 28 times for 132 yards and 3 touchdowns. Estes rushed 13 times for 31 yards and a TD. Shaw was a perfect 4 of 4 on PAT boots.

Tanner recovered a fumble. Tyler Neal, Blythe, and Estes led the Hornets with 4 solo tackles each. Jace Rich and Shaw had 3 solo tackles. Shaw and Hunter Fox had a sack. Blythe had 2 interceptions. Neal and Rich had 1 interception each.

In the Wildcats 28-20 loss to Caverna, ECHS had 124 yards rushing and 72 yards in the air. The Wildcats gave up 242 yards on the ground and 11 yards in the air. Daren Alexander was 4 of 11 for 27 yards, 1 interception, and 1 touchdown. Noah Meredith was 1 for 1 for 5 yards and a TD. Mills threw 1 pass to Garrett Lyons for a 40-yard completion. Noah Meredith and Zander Bass both had TD catches.

Mills rushed 17 times for 73 yards. Bass had 6 carries for 58 yards.

Four Wildcats recovered fumbles: Logan Davis, Dustin Logsdon, Bass, and Abney. Davis led the team with 5 solo tackles. Ace Daugherty and Meredith had 3 solo tackles. Meredith also had an interception.
