Sunburg Heritage Arts Initiative

The Sunburg Heritage Arts Initiative has several workshops scheduled.

Introduction to Rosemaling: Oct. 9, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunburg Community Center. Cost of $20, limited to 10 students ages 18 and over, with instructor Lynette Swanson. Students will complete a heart project using acrylic paints and will be taken home at the end of class. All materials are included in the registration fee. Masks are required for all students who are not fully vaccinated. Bring your own noon lunch or eat at the local café. Register through KMS Community Ed online at www.kms.k12.mn.us or 320-264-1413.

Fiddle workshop: Oct. 17, 1 to 4 p.m., Hope Lutheran Church; open to all violin players of any age with two or more years of playing experience strongly encouraged; those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Learn fiddle tunes and techniques in both small and large groups and perform in a student/teacher 4 p.m. concert at the end of the workshop. Instructors are Cristina Seaborn and Dempsey Schroeder. Maggie Harp is the accompanist on piano and guitar. Advance registration required by Oct. 11, space limited. Call Darlene at 320-599-4700.

Willmar Community Education

Willmar Community Education has several art-related classes scheduled. Advance registration is required for all the classes. Cooking classes are in the Food & Drink calendar published Thursdays.

Stained glass for beginners: Oct. 26, 7 to 9 p.m., and Nov. 6 and 13, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Willmar Senior High School, ages 15 and up; instructor Tom Nelson; $85 fee plus $25 to $70 for supplies; from cutting and soldering, make one copper foil project during class. Lead assembly techniques will be demonstrated.

Rock painting: Have you found any painted rocks outside around Willmar? Learn how to create your own! Paints, brushes and rocks will be provided for each class. The classes are from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays at Jefferson Learning Center, ages 5 and up; those ages 5-11 will need to sign up with a responsible adult; $5 first person, $3 for each additional family member; instructor Sarah Miller. There are four classes scheduled for this fall. They are:

Rock painting dinosaurs: Oct. 9, learn how to paint these colorful dinosaurs for yourself, including tips and tricks to help you gain confidence as a painter and be guided in painting your very own mini collection of dinosaurs.

Rock painting lettering: Nov. 13, learn tips for getting started with lettering in addition to a few simple background designs that will amaze anyone who sees your work.

Rock painting gnomes: Dec. 11, step-by-step instructions to paint your very own gnomes. In addition to the basic instructions, you'll learn some simple variations to make your gnome unique for any personality or holiday.

Square dance lessons

The Jolly Twirlers Square Dance Club will be teaching the art of square dancing to singles and couples of all ages. The lessons are from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Nov. 4 at the Willmar Community Center. The Jolly Twirlers dancers serve as mentors for new dancers learning the different square dance “calls.” Adults are $3 per lesson, students ages 16 and under are $1.50.

Milan Village Arts

Milan Village Arts classes have been scheduled for the next year. The complete schedule is on the website. Members receive a discount on tuition. Supply fees are paid to the instructor at the end of class. Wood bowl turning: Oct. 22-23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; instructor Steve Mullins; beginner and above, minimum age 16; learn the basic skills needed to turn a wooden bowl on a lathe from “green” unseasoned wood; tuition $230, supplies $45; registration deadline Oct. 9. Class will be offered again in March.

Christmas cookie sampler: Dec. 4. 1 to 5 p.m., instructor Maureen Hark; beginner and above; ages 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent; make krumkake, kransekake and more; tuition $70 supplies included; registration deadline Nov. 20.

Donna Middleton started working at the West Central Tribune in 1975 and was the news assistant since 1992. She compiled the arts, health, farm and community page calendars, as well as rewrites and work on the special sections. Donna retired in 2023.
