Ryan Taylor: 'Magpies need to match their efforts in training on the pitch'

Maidenhead United Women manager Ryan Taylor believes his side are not replicating their efforts in training on the competitive field after they were dumped out of the FAWNL Plate by Queens Park Rangers.

Taylor has been at the helm of the Women’s National League side for just over a month now after he took over from Nevin Saroya, and the 37-year-old admits he is still getting to grips with the club and its players.

Speaking to the Advertiser post-match on Saturday, Taylor believes in the talent he’s got at his disposal but his attempts of building the Magpies’ strongest lineup have been stifled through injury and absences, as demonstrated in the side’s 6-1 loss.

“Even though we’re putting the training in, we’re not actually putting it out on the pitch which is disappointing from myself and the coaches,” he said. “We all know that’s not good and we’re going to need to change things quickly.

“I’m a few games in now from when I took over from Nev (Saroya) who had the players well drilled and they were very good defensively. We’ve changed things a little bit in terms of how we want to play, and we seem to be a little bit more open now which has caused us problems.

“In terms of the squad, the players know we need to bring in two or three more to add a little bit of depth to our team. We’ve had several injuries and three late pull-outs today aswell so that doesn’t help when I’m trying to form a consistent squad.

“But it’s something only I can address. It’s taken me time getting to know the players, what their strengths are, how they work together, and trying to get some consistency in selection also.”

Taylor added: “After the game, we just talked as a group about the good and the bad. The players analysed the performance, as I did, and one or two words were said. Some of the players had discussions between themselves which I suppose after that performance is what needed to happen.

“We have a big few weeks now where we’ve really got to knuckle down to achieve what we’re trying to do.”
