Former NICU patients and their families reunited with nurses and doctors Saturday. It's the first in-person reunion at Nebraska Medical Center since 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Babies are a lot stronger than how medical staff remembers them.
"We spent 78 days in the NICU," said Blake Schmidt, whose wife had to deliver their baby at 29 weeks. "These nurses and doctors basically became our second family."
Nurses taught one mother how to be a parent, after spending three months together.
"I lost my mom early in life," Kalee Thompson said. "So they helped me learn how to be a mom."
Nurses held and laughed with children they once delivered and even resuscitated.
"I've been invited to high school graduations," NICU nurse Connie Brazeal said. "I've gone to lots of birthday parties over the years, and it's so much fun. I don't know anybody else there at the events, but it doesn't matter."
Families celebrated the stars of the NICU, who can now look forward to happy and healthy lives.
