AMES. DOZENS OF BABIES ARE FINALLY ABLE TO GO BACK TO NEBRASKA MEDICAL CENTER. AND IT’S NOT FOR A CHECKUP. THESE FORMER NICU PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE REUNITING WITH NURSES AND DOCTORS SATURDAY. OH, THERE YOU GO. BABIES LIKE ARI ARE A LOT STRONGER THAN HOW THESE NICU STAFF MEMBERS REMEMBERED THEM. THEY HAD TO DELIVER HIM AT 29 WEEKS. SO WE WE SPENT 78 DAYS IN THE NICU AND, YOU KNOW, THESE NURSES I’M DOCTORS BASICALLY BECAME OUR SECOND FAMILY. FAMILIES ARE ENJOYING THE FIRST IN-PERSON REUNION AT NEBRASKA MEDICAL CENTER SINCE 2019 DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. YOU HAVE TO SMILE THAT WAY. STILL FEELING THE EXTRA LOVE AFTER WHAT THEY’VE BEEN ABLE TO OVERCOME. I JUST REMEMBER YOU THE FIRST NIGHT. LIKE WE’RE SO SCARED. YEAH. THESE NURSES TAUGHT ISAAC’S MOM HOW TO BE A PARENT AFTER SPENDING THREE MONTHS TOGETHER. I LOST MY MOM EARLY IN LIFE, SO THIS REALLY, REALLY THEY HELPED ME LEARN HOW TO BE A MOM, A GREAT ONE. THANK YOU. NURSES HOLD AND LAUGH. OH, MY GOD. THESE BABIES, THEY ONCE DELIVERED AND EVEN RESUSCITATED. I’VE BEEN INVITED TO HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATIONS, SO I’VE GONE TO LOTS OF BIRTHDAY PARTIES OVER THE YEARS, AND IT’S SO MUCH FUN. YOU KNOW, IT’S LIKE I DON’T KNOW ANYBODY ELSE THERE AT THE AT THE EVENTS, BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER NOW. CELEBRATING THE STARS OF THE NEWBORN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT. I CAN’T BELIEVE ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE HERE AND LOOKING FORWARD TO ENJOYING HAPPY MORE THAN YOU COULD EVER HAVE IMAGINED. AND HEALTHY LIVES. THESE NURSES, I MEAN, BAS

Dozens of neonatal intensive care unit babies finally returned to Nebraska Medical Center Saturday, but not for a check-up.Former NICU patients and their families reunited with nurses and doctors Saturday. It's the first in-person reunion at Nebraska Medical Center since 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Babies are a lot stronger than how medical staff remembers them. "We spent 78 days in the NICU," said Blake Schmidt, whose wife had to deliver their baby at 29 weeks. "These nurses and doctors basically became our second family."Nurses taught one mother how to be a parent, after spending three months together."I lost my mom early in life," Kalee Thompson said. "So they helped me learn how to be a mom."Nurses held and laughed with children they once delivered and even resuscitated. "I've been invited to high school graduations," NICU nurse Connie Brazeal said. "I've gone to lots of birthday parties over the years, and it's so much fun. I don't know anybody else there at the events, but it doesn't matter."Families celebrated the stars of the NICU, who can now look forward to happy and healthy lives.
