Vikings Pivot Hard From Aaron Rodgers, Discussing Deal With Ryan Tannehill

The Minnesota Vikings are in need of a veteran quarterback, and after reportedly moving on from top veteran free agent QB Aaron Rodgers, the team is pivoting to another option.

According to Jordan Schultz, the team is having discussions with former Ryan Tannehill, a former Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans quarterback.

Tannehill would be brought in as a veteran mentor for their current young quarterback and expected starter J.J. McCarthy.

While the 36-year-old quarterback didn't play at all last year, he still was a solid NFL quarterback for most of his 11-year career.

In his last season as a starter, back in 2023 with the Titans, he finished with just four touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight starts.

Tannehill may not be the answer as a starting quarterback for a contending team, but he is an intriguing option to be a temporary starter or a mentor to McCarthy as a backup.

He has plenty of NFL experience, doesn't have any significant personality or off-the-field issues that could make him a problem in the locker room, and he could even play solid in a pinch in what is a great offensive supporting cast in Minnesota.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell managed to resurrect the career of Sam Darnold, now a Seattle Seahawk, last season, which means it is entirely possible he can pull some competent quarterback play out of Tannehill for one more season.

Having top tier weapons in Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Aaron Jones surely helps as well.

The Aaron Rodgers situation continues to get confusing as time goes on, but as of now, it seems like he has interest in the Vikings, but they no longer have interest in him and are looking for alternative options.

Recent reports said Rodgers met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, which seems like the only real option on the table for him.

While some rumors are still suggesting Rodgers and the Vikings have mutual interest, the team signing a different veteran, like a Ryan Tannehill, would surely shut the door on the 41-year-old quarterback being the starter in Minnesota next season.

After some solid play throughout his career, Tannehill could be granted with one more chance to make an impact in the NFL.

Whether he is the opening game starter or just there to help J.J. McCarthy develop, the 36-year-old would be an intriguing fit with the Minnesota Vikings.

With no deal imminent at the moment, it will be interesting to see how the Minnesota quarterback situation continues to develop as the offseason goes on.
