Green Bay gears up for NFL Draft: Safety, community and excitement
The countdown is on—less than one month until Green Bay hosts the NFL Draft, an event expected to bring nearly 250,000 visitors to the smallest NFL city.
Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich and the city's team are deep in preparations.
In an exclusive one-on-one interview with WISN 12 News Blake Eason, Genrich said public safety is a top priority.
"Obviously, that's, you know, that's the most critical responsibility we have as a city," said Genrich.
So much so, Genrich said this will be one of the city's biggest expenses, coming in just north of $1 million.
"I think the the one thing that we really have going for us is a public safety team that does this on a on a pretty regular basis," said Genrich, referring to packed Packers games, but noting this will be much different.
"It's a big undertaking for our community size," Genrich shared, underscoring the city's commitment to preparedness.
While a million-dollar investment on the front end, the mayor believes the return will be worth it.
The estimated economic impact to Green Bay is $20 million, but the state of Wisconsin could see a number closer to $100 million.
"Lambeau Field is is the mecca, right, for all serious football fans, not just in the country but really around the world," Genrich said.
Historic Lambeau Field will no doubt be the centerpiece of the NFL draft, but Mayor Genrich hopes to showcase all of Green Bay when a quarter of million people come to town.
The city is hosting seven different events in addition to draft programming, calling it Touchdown Downtown.
"Make it attractive for people to leave that campus and go to your downtown," said Genrich.
An NFL Draft kickoff with fireworks, a music festival, and even a Draft Day 5K are among some of the events listed online.
Genrich said this was the advice he learned from other cities who've hosted the NFL Draft in the past, now he's the next one up.
The NFL Draft comes to Green Bay April 24-26.
