RURAL FAIRFIELD — Scott Rosno used what he calls a “dangerous” word to describe the overarching quality of the St. Cecilia girls track and field team this spring.
The coach said the Hawkettes have potential.
“There’s some definite recognition that there’s a variety of talent there,” Rosno said.
That was in the aftermath of St. Cecilia’s win at the Sandy Creek invite Tuesday on the oft-windy hill in rural Fairfield.
The Hawkettes clinched the invite crown with 95 points, scoring in 11 events to edge second-place West Holt, which racked up 90 points.
“The girls were able to do quite a bit of damage on the track,” said Rosno, whose team finished top six in all but the 100 hurdles, 400 and 400 relay.

That includes freshman Aspen Anderson, who placed second in each the 100 and 200, posting personal-best times albeit just a few meets into her high school career.
Anderson is the younger sister of Jenson Anderson, who won the state high jump in 2023 and graduated last spring with 10 state medals.
“It’s still early in the season, but it’s exciting to see some potential with what she is doing,” Rosno said. “The biggest positive there is she’s been very open to a variety of events... (It’s about) where can we use that speed of hers and then mix in her competitiveness.”

St. Cecilia didn’t net a victory on the track, but its points piled up to the team victory.
Junior Emery Vargas took silver in both distance races, including a season-best 12:39.88 in the 3,200. Freshman teammate Lily Daly finished behind Vargas in the 1,600.
Nathie Krikac (300 hurdles) and Lindsey Parr (800) each recorded third-place finishes. Izzy Kvols was fourth in the 800.
The Hawkettes’ lone gold medalist at the meet was Payton Sullivan in the long jump. She cleared 16-feet, 6 ½ inches. She also placed fourth in the triple jump (31-8 ½) — teammate Ava Wiles was second with a season-best 32-8 ¼ — and sixth in the 100, running personal best 13.82 seconds.
Missing from the field bunch was senior Abbey Musalek, who was out with a non-sport injury.
“Gotta love prom,” Rosno said with a half-hearted smile. “...And trampolines.”
“But we were able to get contributions from some areas. Meets like this, we definitely have some opportunities.”

Leading the youthful STC boys, junior Thomas Bykerk ran a personal best 2:05. 21 in the 800, which was good for third Tuesday.
Aiden Schieffer (fifth, 1,600), Trevor Lindauer (fifth, shot put) and the 3,200 relay (third place) were STC’s other medalists.
“The hope is to scratch and claw a little bit with the throws, and Thomas Bykerk has an opportunity to lead us in the mid-distances,” Rosno said. “At the end of the year, we’ll still be young but not near as inexperienced.”
Doniphan-Trumbull was Tribland’s top boys finisher in third place. Kaser Johnson PR’d in the 3,200, running a 10:17.61 for the victory. Jack Poppe won the 300 hurdles and Luke Askey the high jump.
Sandy Creek’s Carrigan Rempe swept the girls hurdles, with personal best times. The freshman ran a 17.00 in the 100 and 48.55 in the 300. Caitlyn Biltoft won the high jump. The Cougars’ 3,200 relay won with a 10:27.28.
