THE Houston Texans have handed Jalen Pitre a bumper new deal.

And it's seen the 25-year-old become the HIGHEST-PAID safety in the entire NFL - a title which was previously held by New Orleans Saints star Justin Reid.

Pitre played a crucial role in the Texans' defence in his 12 starts last season, which took his career total to 296 tackles, six interceptions, one sack, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

And the Texans brass have rewarded him with a new three-year deal, which will earn him a pretty penny.

Pitre's new contract at the NRG Stadium is understood to be worth close to a whopping $39million.

And $29m of that mammoth salary is GUARANTEED for the former Baylor Bears standout.

Another said: " That's a decent contract."

Pitre, whose fine season was cut short when he suffered a pectoral injury, is the third Texans defensive player to earn a contract extension in the offseason.

Cornerback Derek Stingley and defensive end Daniel Hunter recently committed their futures to the franchise with long-term deals.

Texans head coach said of Stingely and Hunter's new contracts: "We want to send a message.

"To all of our young guys, when you do it the right way.

"Guys like Stingley, Nico [Collins], young guys who came in and played really well for us, they became top players in the league at their positions.

"You want to reward those guys."
