SHENANDOAH – The Shenandoah boys track and field team won seven events and finished second Monday, April 14, at the Mustang Relays.
Additionally, Titus Steng continued his incredible start to the season, breaking his personal record in both the 100 and 200-meter races in times that would have been first and second at last year’s state meet.
The Mustangs scored 171.5 points, trailing only Glenwood’s 203. Fremont-Mills took third with 96 points, followed by Sidney’s 84, East Mills’ 69.5 and Essex’s 27.
Five different athletes won five individual events for the host Mustangs.
Gabe Buttry won the 100-meter dash in 11.40 seconds, Cole Graham took the 200 in 23.39 and Cole Scamman won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.78. In the field, Simon Hennings won the discus with a best throw of 129 feet, 9 inches and Hunter Swaink was long jump champion in 18-11.
Swaink was also part of the runner-up shuttle hurdle relay team, which finished .04 behind Glenwood in a time of 1:04.93. Swaink had the team’s fastest split in under 15 seconds.

Shenandoah senior Hunter Swaink won the long jump and was part of the runner-up shuttle hurdle relay team Monday, April 14, at the Mustang Relays.
“I was just trying to chase someone down and that gave me a good push,” Swaink said. “As a team we want to get down to 1:02 or 1:01. That’s the big goal. My goal is to stay in the high 14s and low 15s and hopefully get into the mid 14s.”
The Mustangs also won the 4x200-meter relay in 1:33.56 with Buttry, Harley Wiley, Santiago Hernandez and Graham. They also won the 800 medley relay with Buttry, Joey O’Rourke, Graham and Hernandez in 1:40.36.
Bill Flowers was one of the program’s assistant coaches leading the Mustangs Monday and he said it was a good performance for the team at their home track.
“Everyone performed at their best even with the strong wind,” Flowers said. “Hunter was amazing, and Cole Graham came from behind twice.”
Dylan Kellogg had a strong night in the distance events for Shenandoah, taking second in the 3,200 and 1,600-meter runs in 11:34.49 and 5:21.75. He was also third in the 800 in 2:18.71.
Joey O’Rourke added a runner-up showing in the 400 in 55.11. Hennings and Scamman added to their respective days with Hennings taking third in the shot put at 39-7 and Scamman third in the 400 hurdles in 1:02.43. Wiley was third in the 100 at 11.46.
The Mustangs were also second in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Wiley, O’Rourke, Baylor Blank and Buttry finished the 4x100 in 46.12 and O’Rourke, Swaink, Hernandez and Graham added the runner-up 4x400 finish in 3:44.48.
Steng’s three times were 17.04 in the 100, 32.83 in the 200 and 1:07.02 in the 400. He also threw the shot put 12-9, winning all four events unopposed.
Both of Sidney’s event wins came from Carter Buttry in the 1,600 in 5:10.75 and the 3,200 in 10:52.67.

Sidney sophomore Carter Buttry won the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races Monday, April 14, at Shenandoah.
“I felt pretty good in the two mile,” Carter Buttry said. “I started pretty fast but kind of died in the middle. I didn’t run very well in the one mile. I have to push more in the middle laps.”
He added that he wants to get under 10:30 in the 3,200 and under 4:50 in the 1,600 by the end of the season.
The Cowboys had two runner-up finishes in the field with Aiden Stenzel clearing 5-10 to take the high jump and Michael Hensley throwing the shot put right at 40 feet.
“That was Michael’s first time out in the shot put,” Sidney head coach Donnie Sears said, “and Carter ran well. Calvin Johnson had his wisdom teeth out and hadn’t done anything in 10 days and he had his career best in the 800.
Johnson led off the runner-up 4x800 relay team, along with Carter Jorgenson, Flynt Bell and Andreas Buttry in a time of 9:38.12. The Cowboys were also third in the 4x400 with Bell, Stenzel, Andreas Buttry and Johnson.
Tyler Inman led Essex’s effort with a career best time in the 1,600, placing third at 5:35.99.

Essex freshman Tyler Inman raced to third place in the 1,600-meter run Monday, April 14, in Shenandoah.
“I wanted to beat my PR,” Inman said, “which I did by 12 seconds. I think it’s the spikes I had on.”
Isaiah Sholes added a fourth place showing in the high jump, clearing 5-8.
“Isaiah has a couple of things still to work on,” Essex head coach Kaelly Scherff said. “He’s improving and it will be fun to watch him the rest of the season. Tyler joined later in the year and we’re just now figuring out where to put him. He’s definitely a distance runner.”
The Sidney boys compete again Thursday at Underwood while Shenandoah and Essex are off until Monday’s run at Lenox.
