AUSTIN, Texas (KLTV) - An East Texas senator has filed legislation to rename a road in honor of fallen firefighters.

Sen. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) layed out SB 682 before the Senate Comittee on Transportation Wednesday morning. The bill would rename a portion of FM 2493, also known as Old Jacksonville Highway, in Smith County as the Captain Kevin Williams and Firefighter Austin Cheek Memorial Highway.

Williams, 42, and Cheek, 19, both firefighters with Noonday VFD, died while fighting a house fire off of FM 2493 in in Flint on Aug. 3, 2007.

The proposed portion to be renamed would stretch from the intersection of Church Street in Flint to County Road 150 in Smith County.

Hughes also laid out two similar bills to rename East Texas roadways. One road is in Morris County, and the other is in Upshur County. The layouts for both can be viewed below.
