Rainier: A Beer Odyssey

A buzzy new documentary film, “Rainier: A Beer Odyssey,” tells the epic story of the beer brand and its world-famous 1970s advertising campaign — designed by a small, up-and-coming agency with everything to prove — that put the Seattle-based brewing company on the map.

The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at Vashon Theatre, with director Isaac Olsen and producer Rob Peterson in attendance. The filmmakers will take part in a Q&A after the screening that evening. T-shirts, stickers and posters will also be available.

The film won the 2024 prize for Best Pacific Northwest Film from the Seattle Film Critics Society, and was an official selection in the both the 2024 Tacoma Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival.

Shoot to Show

Island photographer Ray Pfortner will once again offer his beloved and long-running annual photography workshop, Shoot to Show.

The workshop is open to ages 15 and older, and for all skill levels, using any camera — phone to mirrorless. This year’s theme is the “Science and Art of Tramp Harbor.”

The workshop will give participants the chance to explore Vashon’s Tramp Harbor and in doing so, support the Vashon Parks Foundation’s and Friends of Tramp Harbor Dock’s fundraising efforts for a new pier.

Learn about wildlife above and below the water with Maria Metler, of Vashon Nature Center, and take that knowledge on location in a group photo shoot with Pfortner. Then, continue to shoot individually around Tramp Harbor for one month, sharing your results for feedback on flickr.com and in person.

Class sessions are on Saturdays, April 26 and May 3, from 9-11:30 a.m. and Thursday, May 29, from 7-9 p.m. The workshop will culminate in a big screen presentation of the juried results on June 17 at Vashon Theatre.

Scholarships are available for the $150 workshop. Find out more and sign up at tinyurl.com/yrswp74a.
