Vinny Terraciano wasn’t feeling the vibe a couple frames into his record-setting night.
Actually, it was his Hammer Artic Vibe bowling ball.
He needed a new effect, dipped into his bag and plucked out his Hammer Effect. Terraciano proceeded to register his first perfect game.
“I always use both balls in practice,” said the 25-year-old from Brodheadsville. “I was sick and missed the week before, but I hit the Effect with a 1,000-grit pad. The Vibe wasn’t doing what I wanted to do, so I switched.”
The move propelled his 234 opening game in the PMC League at Skylanes. But the righty set sail in Game 2 and surpassed his previous best start of the front six or seven. Terraciano stuck to a routine.
“I didn’t look at the score. I was staying in my lane and didn’t change a thing,” he said. “I had one Brooklyn strike in the first nine frames. I felt pretty calm for the 10th and 11th, but the last ball I was shaking in my boots.”
He didn’t look back at the audience that had assembled. The plan was to throw a good shot despite the nerves. The Effect spun over the 15-16 board, heading to the pocket.
“It was a good shot,” Terraciano said. “It went right over where I was looking and hit the pocket light, and the last pin to fall was a 4-pin. When it fell, I never felt like it before. It was great to get it out of my system.”
But the job wasn’t done. Terraciano was focused on 266 for 800. He started strike-spare-strike-spare before hitting a strike streak again. He lost his ball reaction near the end and finished at 236 for a career-best 770.
This is Terraciano’s first full season back from a seven-year hiatus. He last averaged 162 in 2017-18 and is currently scoring at a 192 clip.
Inching toward 300
The area 300 count jumped by 13 and stands at 279 as the season winds down.
Joe Mandarino joined Terraciano with the first 300 of his career. He took down Bar-Don and the Howell Plumbing Mixed League with a middle-game 300 surrounded by 198 and 204 for 702.
At Skylanes, Joe Fiume was making waves of his own in the same league as Terraciano. The talented righty posted a huge 845 on games of 277-300-268, landing with the ninth highest series of the campaign.
Jason Cummings provided Skylanes’ third perfect game of the week.
Earl Bowl in Earlington churned out 300s again. Scott Keeler led the charge with his 300-838, followed by Matt Hercek and Patrick Kennedy stringing a dozen.
Blue Valley also provided a trio of perfectos, including the hot hand of Tyler Heckman. The lefty is dropping 300s left and right. Last week, he scored his sixth perfect game this season and used it in an 803 set in the Thursday Mixed League. Travis Remaly scored 300 in the Monday Major, and Keith Wagner strung 12 in the Friday Scratch Trio.
Seven is a lucky number but for Owen Darby, it marks the total number of 300s he’s tossed at Steel City. Chris Slater added one of his own in the same Perfect Game Pub League. Jason Mack was on top of the list at the Bethlehem center thanks to his 816 in the Gary Piripavel Memorial League (269-257-290).
The final 300 came from Coplay Saengerbund courtesy of Jeff Sostarecz. He wasn’t finished and capped his night with 805.
It was The Krista Sandt Show this week. The newly announced Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame inductee rattled off a pair of 700s at Steel City, tallying 736 and 701. She also exorcised one of her demons. East Allen Fire Company had her number until last week in the playoffs of the Lehigh Valley Clubmen’s League. She went 217-279-222 for a satisfying 718.
The Henderson women took over Oakwood over the past couple weeks as mom, Jan, posted a nice 728 in the Monday Misfit League thanks to games of 213-268-247. Daughter Jenna rallied for a 701 in the same circuit and came back a few days later with 247-246-278–771, tying for seventh-best series this season.
Maddix Myers sits just outside the Top 10 list for the Junior boys due to his 279-760 at Bar-Don. Nathan Pantuso nipped Chase Leckner, 729-712, for top honors at Steel City.
The men have tied the all-time area record with 140 800 series. The Junior boys reset their high with 101 700s, surpassing the old mark of 99. The women put their previous high of 120 in the rear-view mirror and now sport 130 700s.
