Broncos GM may have revealed which RB they want to take in NFL Draft

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton may have provided a clue about which running back they fancy in the 2025 NFL Draft, scheduled April 24-26 in Green Bay.

Per DNVR Sports' Zac Stevens, on Thursday, Paton said, "You don't see a lot of college players [pass-protecting] at a high level," and the team believes that's a key trait for RBs.

Ohio State's TreVeyon Henderson — whom the Broncos met with Wednesday, per Mike Klis of KUSA-TV in Denver — is considered one of the better pass-blocking RBs in the draft.

"He might be the best pass-protecting back in the draft," wrote NFL.com's Lance Zierlein in his scouting report.

Henderson (5-foot-10, 202 pounds) also provides value as a pass-catcher and runner. In four seasons with the Buckeyes, he logged 3,761 rushing yards and 853 receiving yards.

Taking Henderson with pick No. 20 in the first round could be a slight reach for the Broncos. However, will he be available at pick No. 51 for Denver in the second round? In Tankathon's latest mock draft, the Dallas Cowboys take him with pick No. 44.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton didn't clarify whether they would spend their first-rounder on an RB.

"If you have a real clear vision for how you want to use [an RB], I think it's just the team's feeling for how good that player is," Payton said, via Stevens.

Regardless, expect the Broncos to select an RB to improve their ground game, which ranked 16th in the league in rushing yards last season (112.2).

If Henderson lands with Denver, the team should feel thrilled about that. Versatile RBs like Alvin Kamara and Darren Sproles thrived under Payton when he was the New Orleans Saints head coach.

Henderson, a 2024 national champion, likely has the tools needed to become a similar playmaker for the Broncos.

Insiders explain why Browns drafted Dillon Gabriel before Shedeur Sanders

Leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, numerous stories linked the Cleveland Browns with Shedeur Sanders out of Colorado, Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart, Alabama's Jalen Milroe and Louisville's Tyler Shough among quarterback prospects. Thus, many were shocked when Cleveland drafted Oregon's Dillon Gabriel at pick No. 94. The Browns then made the most noteworthy move of the fifth round when they traded up to select Sanders with the No. 144 overall choice. On Sunday, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand shared that the club had Gabriel ranked fourth on its draft board for players at the position. "They had him behind [Miami's Cam Ward], Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough, who were already taken, and ahead of Jalen Milroe, who was taken two spots earlier by Seattle," Grossi added about the Browns drafting Gabriel. "Shedeur Sanders, who was in the midst of a historic free fall, was sixth on their board after Gabriel and Milroe." As had been widely expected, the Tennessee Titans made Ward the draft's first pick on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer said on the latest edition of the "Orange and Brown Talk Podcast" that she "wasn’t surprised about Dillon Gabriel because I knew they really liked him a lot and I knew that they were targeting him in this draft and that they were probably going to end up with him at some point in this draft." According to Cabot, the Browns "flew out to Eugene, Oregon, the day before they went to Colorado, to Boulder to take (two-way star) Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders to dinner. That happened on April 3. The day before that, they flew to Eugene...they snuck in this private visit and dinner with Dillon Gabriel out in Oregon." As The Athletic's Zac Jackson noted, Gabriel was projected as a third-day pick as recently as this past Friday afternoon. ESPN's Matt Miller had Gabriel ranked as the 235th-best overall prospect in this year's class. While Miller had Sanders at No. 25 in his final rankings, it's now clear the polarizing quarterback did himself no favors with how he and his camp handled the predraft process. With Deshaun Watson likely to miss a majority of the 2025 season after he suffered a torn Achilles this past October and then tore the Achilles again during his recovery, Gabriel and Sanders are on track to compete with veteran Joe Flacco and 2022 first-round selection Kenny Pickett for Cleveland's starting quarterback job. Jackson mentioned that "Sanders seems to be guaranteed nothing" regarding his status with the Browns, even though logic suggests he could have the highest ceiling of the team's four available signal-callers. Considering what both Grossi and Cabot said about how the Browns view Gabriel, it seems that the club will have to make a big call about Sanders, Flacco or Pickett after it plays its final preseason game in August.

Gary Bettman and the NHL Send a Warning to the Canadiens and Capitals Ahead of Crucial Game Four

Following the shenanigans during Game 3 between the Capitals and Canadiens, the league has issued both teams a warning to ensure cooler tempers prevail. Montreal Canadiens forward Josh Anderson and Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson were each fined $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct during Game 3 of their First Round playoff series on Friday. The fight occurred at the end of the second period. Anderson and Wilson both received minor penalties for roughing and 10-minute misconducts for entering the bench and continuing the brawl there. Today, NHL insider Renaud Lavoie revealed that the NHL has warned both the Capitals and Canadiens organizations to remain more disciplined during TV timeouts, warmups, and play at the end of the period. The league was displeased with the arguments and fights, especially the situation that spilled onto the bench, which ultimately led to the two players receiving fines. Game 4 is today at 6:30 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, there are concerns about the goaltending. Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson was seen practising today Capitals goalie Logan Thompson, who appeared to have a serious knee injury after colliding with top scorer Dylan Strome, unexpectedly was on the ice full-go in practice this morning and might be in tonight. On the Canadiens' side, Samuel Montembeault departed Game 3 following what appeared to be a minor hamstring pull. While he played a couple of shifts afterwards, there is concern about how much hamstring strength is needed for a goalie's lateral movement. Montembeault has been confirmed to be out day-to-day, and he will miss tonight's game, which will send Cayden Primeau to the Bell Centre to serve as Jakub Dobes' backup.

Steelers receive stern warning about Will Howard's development

Steelers receive stern warning about Will Howard's development

The Pittsburgh Steelers may not have gotten a surefire starting quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, but they did address the position with a national champion. Will Howard had an amazing playoff run, and that led to him being selected by Pittsburgh in the sixth round. The most likely scenario is that he will be a career backup, which is still respectable for how late he was picked. Even then, there is still some upside to his game. He most likely won't be a full-time starter, but the odds are still greater than zero. While making an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Mark Kaboly talked about those expectations for Howard. Despite how low they are, Kaboly said that the Steelers should still make an effort to make him a starter or, at least, treat him better than their more recent rookies. "I don't think there's a lot of expectations for [Will Howard] but let's hope [the Steelers] approach his development a little better than they approached, say, Kenny Pickett's early-stage development or Mason Rudolph's early-stage development, where they basically just ignored them," said Kaboly. While the Steelers have not been able to find their Ben Roethlisberger replacement, that is partially their own fault. Mason Rudolph has shown flashes of greatness, and Kenny Pickett was a former first-round pick who had a knack for making clutch plays, so there was obviously some talent there. The amount of talent they each have/had can be up for debate, but there was still some hope. The Steelers have been known to be sticklers about how they approach the development of rookies, especially quarterbacks. They tend to wait until they absolutely have to to give their young guns a chance to start, but while that's happening, they put all their focus on the starter. At times, it feels like the new passers have to fend for themselves or get help from their teammates. Rudolph's relationship with Roethlisberger was rocky after he was first drafted as a third-round project. There were multiple rumors and subtle jabs being thrown around about how the veteran was a bad mentor and was not really available to help out his potential successor. That led to Rudolph being a very late bloomer, as he didn't get a real chance to start again until the end of 2023, when he took the league by storm. Meanwhile, Pickett was seen as the most pro-ready option out of the entire 2022 draft class, yet he entered his rookie season as a scout-team quarterback and had that role throughout all of training camp and most of preseason. He only got the chance to start because Mitch Trubisky had gotten in a heated argument with one of his wideouts in the locker room. Even after getting the starting job, Pickett was handcuffed by the coaching staff in numerous ways. It didn't help that the offense was run by Matt Canada, who was so toxic that the Steelers were forced to fire him. Pickett then showed what he was capable of in the very next game before getting injured in the contest after that, which effectively ended his tenure in Pittsburgh. What do Steelers need to do to help rookies develop? First of all, rookie quarterbacks have a lot to learn about this new league full of better defenses and smarter coordinators that can take away their biggest strength. No passer can figure out how to adjust on his own, whether or not he is a first-round pick or an undrafted free agent. They need as much attention from the coaching staff and other quarterbacks on the roster as possible. When the rookie gets his chance to start a game, the Steelers can't handcuff him. There is no better teacher than failure, and the team has to accept that the rookies will make mistakes. That's how they learn and grow. There's no point in taking away the middle of the field or their right to call audibles when the box is obviously stacked. If they don't realize this, Howard won't develop into anything, and neither will anyone who succeeds him.

Green Bay Packers Invite Projected CFL #1 Pick To Rookie Minicamp

The Green Bay Packers got a great haul of young players in the 2025 NFL Draft. Most notably, they took a wide receiver in the first round for the first time since 2002. At this point in the offseason, teams are looking at which undrafted free agents they want to invite to their rookie minicamps. Every year, it seems a few players who went undrafted make NFL rosters. The Packers made an intriguing invite today. Projected 1st round pick for the Canadian Football League (CFL), Connor Shay, has been invited to Green Bay’s rookie minicamp. Green Bay Packers Invite LB Connor Shay Zach Jacobson of Packer Report posted on X that the Green Bay Packers would be inviting the former Wyoming linebacker to their rookie minicamp. It is important to note the Packers have not officially signed him, but are going to take a closer look at him during the team’s practices. Shay’s father is Canadian, so the linebacker qualifies for Canadian citizenship. In the CFL, there are rules on how many non-natives there can be on a roster. This makes players like Connor Shay in high demand. A recent mock draft had Shay going number one overall to the Calgary Stampeders. Last season, he racked up 76 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, and three passes defended. He also tested very well at the NFL Combine. While many teams will invite rookies to their minicamp, this one is interesting because of the current roster makeup for the Green Bay Packers. Possible Perfect Fit The Green Bay Packers are thin at linebacker. Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper are the top two on the depth chart, but after that, it falls off quickly. Last season, the team only rostered five off-ball linebackers, and once injuries piled up, the unit became extremely thin. More than likely, the team wants to have at least six on the 53-man roster. If Shay impresses at the rookie minicamp, it is plausible that he becomes the third person on the depth chart. He will not have much time to make a decision. The CFL season starts in May, right after the minicamp ends. He’ll have to decide whether he wants to pursue his NFL career or be one of the best young players in the league to the north. The Green Bay Packers might be the perfect opportunity for him. If any injury happens at any point, he could become a starter on a defense that was ranked in the top half of the league next year. This is a player to keep an eye out for during the rookie minicamp.
