Crazy game between two top teams ends on 0-and-2 wild pitch as Mamaroneck come from behind to beat Ketcham 10-9
MAMARONECK — Maybe on a field so historic that Kenny Singleton of future Mets, Baltimore Orioles and Montreal Expos fame -- not to mention Yankees broadcasting fame --once launched a pitch so deep to center that it struck the school's clock tower, so many things have been seen that Tuesday's game between Ketcham and the host Tigers might not even merit a second thought.
But if it wasn't historic, it was at least unusual -- at times a showcase for players who'll play beyond high school and at times a reminder that in baseball -- especially high school baseball -- anything is possible.
And that Yogi Berra was spot on about it ain't being over 'til it's over.
When it was finally over, Mamaroneck was dancing and jumping and going walk-off wild at home plate as senior Thomas Griffith sprinted home in the bottom of the seventh with the Tigrers' 10th run in a come-from-behind 10-9 win.
The fact that he scored on an 0-and-2 wild pitch didn't seem startling given what had transpired in the game's last 20 or so minutes.
Consider that in a game in which both managers used a carousel's worth of pitchers, Mamaroneck had seemed fairly assured of winning when up by three runs with Ketcham down to its last two outs with no one aboard in the top of the seventh.
But then Giancarlo Henry singled, and after fouling off multiple pitches, Stephen Polichetti walked. A Mamaroneck pitching change then saw both runners advance on a wild pitch before Shane Riley launched a sacrifice fly to right on an 0-2 pitch, making it a 8-6 game with one on and two out.
A walk to Shane Finnigan was followed by a wild pitch that scored Polichetti and advanced Ethan Paredes, who was running for Finnigan, into scoring position at second.
But the game seemed over when Ensley Perez grounded to short.
Over except for the fact the throw to first was in the dirt and couldn't be scooped, allowing Paredes to score the trying run.
Another ground ball, this one to the right side by Chris Maltais seemed certain to end the frame, except for Mamaroneck's second baseman broke early to cover second as Perez took off for the base with the windup. Maltais's grounder to second then became a base hit.
And it stood to become the game-winning hit when it took an absolute crazy hop, hitting something (perhaps only uneven ground) in right field, bouncing away from the right fielder.
That allowed Perez to score the lead run.
But Mamaroneck, which had trailed 3-1 at the end of one inning, didn't fold its tent.
Graham Williams, who was on the mound in the top of the inning, facing Ketcham's last two hitters, drew a leadoff walk that was of the no-doubt variety as three of the four balls ended up at the backstop.
After Chris Lupo was lifted for Angelo Bodarsky, Bodarsky got a fly out. Tiger centerfielder Thomas Griffith then stepped to the plate.
For a moment, Griffith seemed cast as hero, even if only in a regular-season game in April.
He lined a shot to right and Williams took off running in hare-being-chased-by-hound fashion.
Williams crossed the plate with what seemed like the tying run with Griffith, who'd hesitated between first and second, standing on second as the potential winning run.
But there was a reason he'd hesitated.
His hit wasn't a hit but had landed just foul.
And so, Griffth returned to the batter's box and Williams went back to first.
But then the game took on a weird deja vu feel as Williams took off for second after getting the steal sign.
Griffith knew he was going and when he got an outside pitch, he went with it, hitting the ball the opposite way.
It would have been a pretty easy out, except Ketcham's second baseman, like Mamaroneck's a half inning earlier, broke for the second base bag before the swing to receive the catcher's throw on Williams' steal. As a result Griffith's ball went untouched into right field.
And then that ball also hit something, bouncing away from the Ketcham right fielder.
Williams scored the tying run -- this one counting .
Theo Norkin then followed with another hit to right, moving Griffith, who was on the move with the pitch, to third.
Not wanting to risk a throw-through, Ketcham allowed Norkin to take second uncontested on Bodarky's first pitch to Chris Velazco, which was a strike.
Bodarky got ahead 0-and-2 in the count but his third pitch was in the dirt and flew to the backstop as Griffith scampered home with the winning run and perhaps a lifetime sports highlight memory, since, unlike Singleton, who hit his clock tower shot for Mount Vernon more than half a century ago, Griffith doesn't plan to play baseball beyond high school.
Griffith later pointed out his game-tying hit became that with a "lucky bounce" in the outfield.
But that hardly made it less significant.
"They're a very good program. They beat us twice last year, so this is nice to see," he said of the win.
Williams earned the win and Bodarky was saddled with the loss.
Mamaroneck, which was No. 2 in the most recent Journal News/lohud baseball rankings, is now 6-1, while Ketcham, which was No. 3, fell to 5-2.
Big moments
Tyler Durkin drove in a pair of runs in the first inning for Ketcham, which was helped out by some Tiger defensive miscues.
Duncan McInness had a first-inning RBI for Mamaroneck.
McInness would have a big part in Mamaroneck scoring four times in the second inning, all the damage coming with two outs.
With two down and no one on, Declan Mcintyre laid down a perfect bunt.
Will Plunkett doubled to left. And McInness, down 0-2 in the count to Ketcham hurler Cameron Maglio, fouled off several pitches before working out a walk to load the bases.
Luke Reagins then scorched a rocket back up the middle that was hit so hard it knocked off Maglio's glove but still had such momentum it went into medium centerfield.
That hit scored two and a wild pitch put runners on second and third
Graham Williams then hit a ball up the middle. Matais, at short, ranged to his left and dove, keeping the ball in the infield. But Williams beat his throw to first and, with two outs and both runners moving, both scored.
Ketcham, which loaded the bases in the third but didn't score, tied the game at 5 in the fifth when Riley homered over the left-centerfield fence, scoring Evan Kelly, who'd blasted a one-hop double over the fence in deep center.
Mamaroneck wasted no time in retaking the lead, scoring three times in the bottom of the inning.
JP Donahue's stand up double to left scored a pair and he scored when Norkin ripped a shot inside the first base bag.
Ketcham coach Pat Mealy noted both teams have multiple games this week, so were handling their pitching staffs differently from the way they normally would by "pitching by committee."
He also indicated the game shouldn't be viewed as reflective of both clubs' talent.
"It was," he said, "a crazy game."
