Freetown, SIERRA LEONE — With just days to go before their historic debut in the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Sierra Leone’s U-20 national team, the Shooting Stars, received a rousing spiritual blessing on Sunday during a special church service held at the Flaming Evangelical Ministries International on Syke Street, Freetown.
The moving ceremony was led by renowned clergyman, Bishop Frederick Abu S. Koroma, who offered heartfelt prayers and words of encouragement to the entire squad and technical team. The Bishop called on divine favour to guide and strengthen the young team as they prepare to make their mark on the continental stage.
The delegation, led by Vice President 1 of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Harold Nat-Johnson, came together in unity and reverence, seeking God’s grace ahead of their highly anticipated journey.
“This is not just a football tournament; it’s a moment of national pride,” Bishop Koroma said. “You carry the dreams of a nation. Go with courage, discipline, and the blessings of your people.”
The Shooting Stars are set to depart Freetown on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, en route to Egypt. Their opening match is scheduled for Sunday, April 27—coinciding with Sierra Leone’s 64th Independence Day—adding deeper symbolic significance to their debut.
For the first time ever, Sierra Leone will compete in the U-20 AFCON tournament, and the excitement across the country is palpable. With spiritual support behind them and the nation cheering them on, hopes are high that the Shooting Stars will shine brightly in Egypt. BT/23/4/2025
