Local roundup: York Catholic girls' lacrosse wins wild shootout at York Suburban

The York Catholic and York Suburban girls' lacrosse teams lit up scoreboards from start to finish Tuesday night, with the Fighting Irish pulling away for a 28-18 road victory as they continued their late-season playoff push.

York Catholic jumped out to a 6-3 lead after the opening quarter, held a 12-10 advantage at halftime and was still up just 15-14 in the middle of the third period before scoring the last six goals of the frame. The Irish added another goal at the start of the fourth and kept peppering the net all the way to the final horn. They improved to 9-3 overall and 7-3 in the York-Adams League with their fifth consecutive win.

Senior Katie Bullen, the reigning Y-A Player of the Year, continued her stellar play since returning from a fractured ankle. The East Stroudsburg pledge tallied seven goals and three assists for the Irish on Tuesday, giving her 21 goals and seven helpers in her three games back in the lineup (she has 29 goals and 14 assists in five contests overall).

Bullen wasn't even the York Catholic points leader in this offensive outburst, though. Freshman Amelia Burkey finished with six goals and five assists, while senior Delaney Staples added four goals and three assists. Anna Seufert and Addison Newman notched three goals and two assists apiece; Katelynn Baker scored three times; and Alexa Smith found the net twice while adding an assist. The 28 total goals are the most by a York-Adams team this season.

Cambria Rice scored a game-high 10 goals for the Trojans (6-7, 4-5) , who also received five goals and two assists from Natalie Martin. Piper Clark rounded out the Suburban scoring with three goals and two assists. Rice scored seven times in the first half, while Martin found the net five times after the break.

York Catholic currently sits fifth in the YAIAA standings behind Dallastown, Susquehannock, Red Lion and New Oxford. The Irish beat New Oxford 17-15 last Tuesday and Kennard-Dale 19-18 last Thursday with Bullen back in the fold. They will have a week off before visiting Spring Grove on April 29, while Suburban visits the Rockets on Thursday.

New Oxford 21, Spring Grove 10: At New Oxford, Cameryn Cohee scored six goals and added an assist to lead the Colonials (9-2, 7-2) to the York-Adams League home victory. Teammates Bella Needle and Allore Needle scored three goals and added three assists apiece. For the Rockets (5-8, 3-7), Madalyn Sliver tallied six goals and two assists.

Red Lion 18, West York 7: At West York, Kaelyn Eaches scored six goals and added four assists while Hailey Hayes had six goals and three assists to lead the Lions (8-3, 8-2) to the easy York-Adams League road victory. Teammate Dulaney Hadden scored twice in the win. Brooke Nalls led the Bulldogs (1-10, 1-9) with three goals and an assist, while Reagan Doll scored once and added two assists.

BOYS' LACROSSE

New Oxford 20, Spring Grove 7: At Spring Grove, freshman L.J. Smith scored a school-record 11 goals to lead the Colonials (8-3, 8-2) to the York-Adams League road victory. New Oxford led 9-4 at halftime and 14-7 through three quarters before scoring all six goals of the fourth. Connor Grubb had a hat trick for the Rockets (7-7, 5-5).

Dallastown 11, Eastern York 3: At Wrightsville, goalie Nick Ungerland stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced in 42 minutes of action to lead the Wildcats (9-5, 8-2) to the road league victory. Teammate Connor Farrell tallied five goals and two assists, while Logan Ungerland had four goals and an assist. The Golden Knights dropped to 7-8 (5-5) with the loss.

Central York 13, Susquehannock 3: At Glen Rock, the Panthers (11-0, 10-0) led 4-1 at halftime before scoring all five goals in the third quarter and securing the York-Adams League road victory. Cole Heinold finished with five goals and an assist, while Rarnell McDowell had two goals and Bennett Dame had a goal and two assists. Grant Johns scored twice for the Warriors (5-8, 4-6).

York Catholic 14, York Suburban 5: At York Catholic, Landon Danes scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Irish (9-4, 7-4) the York-Adams League home victory. Teammate Sam Kemp scored three goals, while Trey Wisniewski and Nolan Savarese had two goals and two assists apiece. Danes and Kyle Scott both reached 200 career points in the win. Nick Lessner scored twice for the Trojans (4-11, 3-7).

Red Lion 15, West York 4: At West York, Tyler Drane notched eight goals and two assists to lead the Lions (6-4, 6-4) to the road league victory. Teammates Ethan Burkindine and Blake Fumia each scored twice, while Camrun Busser won 22 of 23 faceoffs and picked up 17 ground balls. The Bulldogs fell to 0-12 (0-10) with the loss.

Delone Catholic 11, Dover 2: At Dover, Noah Hall scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Squires (7-6, 4-6) to the York-Adams League road victory. Teammate Sam Hall had three goals and two assists, while Nate Smith scored twice and added an assist. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 0-11 overall and 0-10 in the league.

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL

Central York 3, York Suburban 0: At Central York, the Panthers (9-0, 9-0) won the York-Adams League home match 25-20, 25-15, 26-24, scoring the last six points of the third set to complete the sweep. Patrick Siewert finished with 11 kills, John He had 10 kills, Lance Shaffer dished 31 assists and Shivesh Jethwa had 13 digs. For the Trojans (10-1, 8-1), Trent Weinstein tallied 13 kills.

York Catholic 3, Susquehannock 0: At York Catholic, the Irish (5-7, 4-5) won the York-Adams League home match 25-12, 25-18, 25-22. Eli Grandas led the way with 21 assists and five digs, while Jake Patterson had six kills. The Warriors dropped to 1-10 (0-9) with the loss.

SOFTBALL

Central York 11, Dallastown 4: At Central York, Elizabeth Ferrell pitched a complete game, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts, while Brooklyn Shaffer went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Panthers (9-4, 5-2) to the Division I home victory. Teammates Claire Bohannon and Ellie Lamer both went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. For the Wildcats (7-7, 5-4), Lexi Sabold went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Hailey Webster was 1 for 2 with two runs scored.

South Western 10, Red Lion 0 (6 innings): At Hanover, Jayda Koontz pitched a six-inning shutout, allowing two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts, and went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs to lead the Mustangs (12-0, 8-0) to the Division I home victory. Teammate Remi Yates went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Laney Lippy was 2 for 4 and also scored twice. For the Lions (9-5, 4-4), Makayla Yelton went 1 for 2 with a walk and Marisa Shuman was 1 for 3 with a double.

Littlestown 15, Delone Catholic 0 (4 innings): At McSherrystown, Alexis Stonesifer went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer and five RBIs while pitching a four-inning shutout, allowing two hits and two walks with five strikeouts, to lead the Thunderbolts (11-4, 8-1) to the Division III road victory. Teammate Ashlynn Gorsuch went 3 for 3 with a three-run homer, four RBIs and three runs scored, while Hannah Barthel was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and scored twice. The Squirettes fell to 5-9 (5-3) with the loss.

Hanover 15, York High 13: At Hanover, the Nighthawks (3-10) plated nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 14-9 lead and went on to capture the non-divisional home victory. Mckayla Brown finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored; Sophia Rutledge went 2 for 4 with a two-run double in the fifth; and Elizabeth Valentine was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. For the Bearcats (1-10), Jerlyn Polanco-Tineo went 3 for 5 with three doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Genesis Roldan went 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored twice.

BASEBALL

Bermudian Springs 8, York Tech 2: At Spry, Skyler Gentzler pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out five, to lead the Eagles (12-1, 9-0) to the Division III road victory. Teammate Nate Keller went 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored, while Dylan Hubbard was 2 for 4 with an RBI and also scored twice. For the Spartans (3-8, 1-7), Logan Cheramie went 2 for 4 and Jacob Combs was 1 for 3 with an RBI double in the sixth.

Red Lion 14, Susquehannock 2: At Glen Rock, Connor Lawrence went 3 for 5 with a solo homer, three RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Lions (6-4-1) to the easy non-divisional road victory. Teammate Ben Martin pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks while punching out six. Martin also went 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Jeremiah Morales was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Andrew Unglesbee had both RBIs for the Warriors (8-4).

Spring Grove 12, Dover 2: At Dover, Jacob Desort pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out 12, to lead the Rockets (6-6) to the non-divisional road victory. Teammate Tanner Hoffman went 3 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored, while Ashton Parks went 2 for 3 and also scored twice. For the Eagles (2-11), Jimmy Ehrlinger connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Exeter Township 3, West York 2: At Reading, the Eagles plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to capture the walk-off, non-league victory over the Bulldogs (8-6). MJ Vottero pitched five shutout innings for West York, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out 12, and also went 1 for 3 with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth. Teammate Will Plappert was 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Shalom Christian 8, Fairfield 7: At Fairfield, the Flames led 8-6 going into the bottom of the seventh and held on for the non-league road victory. For the Green Knights (2-9), Eddie Eichenlaub went 2 for 3 with a double and scored twice; Stephen Higgs went 2 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored; and relief pitcher Jacob Liller threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.

Mount Calvary Christian 2, Christian School of York 1 (9 innings): At Mount Calvary Christian, the Chargers' Logan Stewart was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the CCAC walk-off home victory. For the Defenders (8-3, 4-2), Austin Holbritter went 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored, while starting pitcher Maverick Browand worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing a run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

BOYS' TENNIS

Red Lion 3, Central York 2: At Red Lion, the Lions (8-8, 3-5) won all three singles matches to secure the Division I victory. The wins came from Kaeden Kelly (7-5, 6-3), Keenan Lynch (6-0, 6-2) and Cole Turner (6-2, 6-0). For the Panthers (6-8, 4-4), Quinn Wiley and Evan Murphy won the No. 1 doubles match 6-1, 6-1, while Cameron Starner and Kamron Gross took the No. 2 match 6-0, 6-1.

York Catholic 5, Dover 0: At Penn State York, the Irish (6-6) received straight-set singles wins from Patrick Koury (6-1, 6-4), Kien Sylvester (6-1, 6-1) and Johnny Mullen (6-2, 6-2) to help them capture the non-divisional home victory. In doubles, teammates Joe Lang and Jack Uphouse won the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-0, while Anthony Zelis and Nathan Mullen took the No. 2 match 6-1, 6-0. The Eagles fell to 1-11 with the loss.

Northeastern 3, Northern York 2

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Penn State York sweeps home doubleheader: At WellSpan Park, the Nittany Lions (15-18) defeated Christendom by the scores of 7-3 and 9-4. In Game 1, PSY broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Shirk had a two-run double in the frame and finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Teammate Ryan Ness was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while pitchers Devin Niemiec and Jackson Lauzon combined to allow three unearned runs on four hits. In Game 2, Andrew Miller (Susquehannock) went 2 for 3 with a two-run double in the bottom of the third; Ness went 2 for 4 with two runs scored; and Michael Newsome was 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

Salisbury 13, York College 8: At York College, the No. 9-ranked Sea Gulls plated four insurance runs in the top of the top of the ninth to take a five-run lead and went to capture the non-conference road victory. For the Spartans (18-17), Brett Michael went 1 for 4 with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second; Richard Kline went 2 for 4 with two RBIs; and Chris Betler went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

MEN'S COLLEGE TENNIS

York College 4, Stevenson 3: At York College, the Spartans (11-2, 3-1) received singles wins from Drew Heinzelmann (6-2, 7-6 [3]), Ben Dorsey (6-0, 6-2) and Hayden Musser (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) to help them secure the MAC Commonwealth home victory. York College also took the doubles point by winning two of three matches, with Jason Lutz and Ian Bartles winning the No. 2 tilt 6-3 while Heinzelmann and Musser won the No. 3 match 6-1.
