LIVE BLOG: Packers select WR in the 1st round for the first time since 2002
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY/AP) - Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft is set to get underway at 7 p.m. on ABC, and you can watch it all on WBAY TV-2! We’ll be updating this live blog throughout the night with any moves the Packers make, any Wisconsin connections the newest draft picks may have, and, of course, each Packers draft pick.
The Packers pick is in...
The Packers stepped into the 23rd overall selection with the pick of the litter, as Matthew Golden, Will Johnson, and Maxwell Hairston were still on the board, among others.
For the first time in over 20 years, they selected a 1st round wide receiver: Matthew Golden of Texas. And to top it all off, Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy announced the pick to the enormous crowd.
Golden torched the SEC last season with the Longhorns, racking up 987 yards and 9 TDs and rocketing up the draft boards. Golden impressed scouts with his explosiveness and acrobatic catches, and had 23 catches of 20+ yards last season to back it up. He ran the fastest 40-yard time at the combine and has drawn comparisons to Jets WR Garrett Wilson.
Picks #11-#22 and #23-#32
The trend of little movement in the first round continued as the draft worked into the middle stages, with the trade for #2 overall standing as the only move through 16 picks. Among some familiar NFC teams, the 49ers grabbed an edge rusher, Mykel Williams of Georgia, and the Cowboys took Alabama OG Tyler Booker. Standout Penn State TE Tyler Warren went 14th to the Indianapolis Colts.
At #17, the Bengals took Shemar Stewart, the predicted Packers choice of Action 2 Sports’ Dave Schroeder.
Well....fiddlesticks (Shemar Stewart was my pick for the Packers pick)

Emeka Egbuka, a name familiar to Big Ten fans, went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, giving QB Baker Mayfield a complement to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, as well as half of a potential successor pair to the duo.
The Denver Broncos snagged another player that was considered as a potential Packers pick, taking Texas CB Jahdae Barron at #20.
Division rival Minnesota Vikings took a guard, Ohio State’s Donovan Jackson, to protect their new starting QB, JJ McCarthy.
The New York Giants made a move to get back into the 1st round, getting the Texans’ pick at #25 for picks #34, #99, and and 2026 3rd rounder. They used the pick to select Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart.
After that, there was another trade, with the Los Angeles Rams trading the 26th pick, as well as the 101st, to Atlanta for picks #46, #232, and a 2026 1st-round selection. The Falcons then took Texas edge rusher James Pearce Jr., who was highly regarded after the combine.
To round out the NFC North’s 1st round, the Detroit Lions took Ohio State DT Tyleik Williams at #28, putting him right in the middle of his college rival’s territory.
One final trade took place at the very end of the 1st round, as Super Bowl opponents Philadelphia and Kansas City swapped. The Chiefs acquired #32 and #164 in exchange for the 31st overall pick. The Eagles picked Alabama LB Jihaad Campbell, while the Chiefs took Josh Simmons, an Ohio State OT.
NFL schedule release date announced at the NFL Draft
Just before the 10th pick of the draft, the NFL announced that the league schedule will be released on May 14.
Picks #3-#10
After the huge trade right after the Titans drafted that netted the Jaguars CB/WR Travis Hunter, the Giants stayed at #3. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network says that shortly after the pick, the Giants picked up the 5th year option on their last highly-drafted pass rusher, Kayvon Thibodeaux.
#3, New York Giants: Abdul Carter, EDGE, Penn State
The New England Patriots, looking to support 2nd-year QB Drake Maye, took one of the most touted offensive linemen of the draft class.
#4, New England Patriots: Will Campbell, OT, LSU
With their newly acquired 5th overall pick, the Cleveland Browns took a defensive star from Michigan.
#5, Cleveland Browns: Mason Graham, DT, Michigan
The Las Vegas Raiders, with a new head coach and offensive coordinator, took a piece for their new offense in a Heisman Trophy runner-up.
#6, Las Vegas Raiders: Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State
The New York Jets, having moved on from the brief Aaron Rodgers era, took an offensive lineman to protect their new QB.
#7, New York Jets: Armand Membou, OT, Missouri
The Carolina Panthers, looking to build around 2023 1st overall pick Bryce Young, selected Arizona standout WR Tetairoa McMillan
#8, Carolina Panthers: Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Arizona
With the 9th pick, the New Orleans Saints, whose starting QB Derek Carr is dealing with a shoulder injury, shored up their offensive line.
#9, New Orleans Saints: Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, Texas
The first NFC North foe of the Packers on the board was the Chicago Bears, and with a new coach to lead 2nd-year QB Caleb Williams, they took a Michigan tight end.
#10, Chicago Bears: Colston Loveland, TE, Michigan
Before the pick, the NFL remembered Steve “Mongo” McMichael, who passed away on Wednesday, and remembered the 50th anniversary of Walter Payton being drafted.
Browns, Jaguars swap picks, Jaguars draft Travis Hunter
2 picks in, and there’s been a trade.
The Cleveland Browns traded the 2nd overall pick, as well as the 104th overall and the 200th overall picks, to Jacksonville for the 5th overall pick, the 36th overall pick, the 126th overall pick, and a 1st round pick in 2026.

Jaguars receive: 2nd overall pick (1st round), 104th overall pick (4th round), 200th overall pick (6th round)
With the pick, the Jaguars selected Colorado CB/WR phenom Travis Hunter.
The 1st pick of the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay
After a rousing and passionate introduction from Packer legends Clay Matthews, Jordy Nelson, Ahman Green, James Jones, and Mason Crosby, as well as Packers superfan Lil Wayne, the Titans were on the clock.
With the 1st overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans have selected University of Miami QB Cam Ward.
He started two seasons at Incarnate Word, throwing 47 TDs in 2021, before transferring to Washington State for another two years. He started all 13 games for FSU, throwing 39 TDs to only 7 INTs, amassing over 4,000 yards.
Packers shopping 1st Round pick?
There are rumblings that the Packers may trade out of the first round, which would make them the 1st host team since the Las Vegas Raiders to trade out of the first round.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer listed the Packers as one of several teams who have explored moving down if a team at the start of the 2nd round is looking to get back into Day 1.
Among the teams that have explored moves down late in the first round, into second round—Broncos, Steelers, Packers, Vikings, Rams, Lions, Chiefs and Eagles. If someone is looking to come up for a QB from the top of 2, they'll be able to find a trade partner.

Packers enter Day 1 with 8 picks
The NFL Draft may be in Green Bay, but Packers fans in attendance will have to wait until the 23rd pick to find out who’s joining the team.
Green Bay enters Day 1 with 8 picks in the 2025 Draft, one each in rounds 1-6 and two in Round 7.
Round 1: 23rd (23)
Round 2: 22nd (54)
Round 3: 22nd (87)
Round 4: 22nd (124)
Round 5: 23rd (159)
Round 6: 22nd (198)
Round 7: 21st (237), 34th (250)
Only the 237th pick originated with another team, with the Packers acquiring it from Pittsburgh in the Preston Smith trade last November. They traded their own 7th-round selection to Tennessee for QB Malik Willis last season.
Pick #250 is a compensatory selection awarded due to OT Yosh Nijman leaving in free agency last year. According to the NFL’s formula, the signings of S Xavier McKinney and RB Josh Jacobs offset the losses of G Jon Runyan and S Darnell Savage.
Wisconsin Connections
Last year’s draft saw two local products go on Day 3, with Fond du Lac native and former Badgers RB Braelon Allen going to the Jets with the 134th pick, while one of his o-linemen and a Kewaunee native, Tanner Bortolini, went to Indianapolis at 117.
This year, three Badger products are projected to be Day 3 picks. OT Jack Nelson, a native of Stoughton, is thought to land as a 5th-round pick, while his trench partner Joe Huber is projected in the 5th or 6th round. Muskego’s Hunter Wohler, a safety, could go anywhere from the 5th round to the 7th round depending on how the draft board shakes out.
There are also three Wisconsin-born players who could hear their names called on days 2 and 3. Purdue OG Marcus Mbow, who attended Wauwatosa East High School, projects as a 3rd-round pick, Florida WR Chimere Dike, a former Badger and Waukesha North star, could be selected in the 5th round by a team looking for a speedy wideout, and Indiana OT Trey Wedig, a Kettle Moraine grad and another former Badger, is projected by scouts as a 6th or 7th rounder.
Lastly, there are a number of former Wisconsin Badgers in this year’s draft, headlined by former 4-year OT Logan Brown, who transferred to Kansas and was a full-season starter for the Jayhawks. Graham Mertz, the Badgers’ signal caller for three seasons before transferring to Florida, could be a late-round selection or an undrafted free agent.
The NFL draft kicks off Thursday night, and Miami quarterback Cam Ward is still the overwhelming favorite to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans.
After that, there should be a lot more intrigue.
Colorado’s two-way star, Travis Hunter, and his quarterback teammate Shedeur Sanders, Penn State’s Abdul Carter, Michigan’s Mason Graham, and LSU’s Will Campbell are all expected to be among the early picks.
Sanders — son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders — is among a contingent of legacy players in this year’s draft and also one of the more polarizing prospects.
There’s also a bit of a running back renaissance in the NFL these days, with teams eyeing Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty and North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton in the first round.
Ward has tried to solidify his status as the top pick over the last few months, working out for all 32 NFL teams at Miami’s on-campus pro day.
“They finally got to see me throw in person. That should be all they need to see,” Ward said. “At the end of the day, if they want to give me the pick or not, I’m going to be happy with whatever team I go to. I just want to play football.”
Advanced analytics have de-emphasized the running back position over the past decade, but the performances of stars like Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley and Baltimore’s Derrick Henry have front offices thinking more about spending a high pick on the position.
The three-day draft will be held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, which is the home of the Green Bay Packers.
Here are a few things to know about the upcoming draft:
When is the NFL draft?
The first round will be on Thursday beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
The second and third rounds are on Friday beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
The fourth through seventh rounds are on Saturday beginning at noon ET.
How do I watch the NFL draft?
All three days will be televised on ESPN, ABC and NFL Network.
Who will be the top picks in the NFL draft?
Ward and Sanders are the top quarterback prospects, though they won’t necessarily be the first two picks like Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels in 2024 and Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud in 2023.
Carter and Hunter are also highly rated prospects, meaning that a non-QB could theoretically be the No. 1 overall selection for the first time since defensive end Travon Walker was the top pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022.
For more information on the top picks, here is the mock draft by AP Pro Football Writer Rob Maaddi.
