Penn State All-American defensive end Abdul Carter was selected by the New York Giants with the third pick in the first round of the NFL draft tonight.
Later in the first round, All-American tight end Tyler Warren was picked by the Indianapolis Colts with the 14th pick.
Carter, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year last season, was projected to be one of the first few picks in the draft.
A star at Philadelphia’s La Salle College High School, Carter led the Big Ten with 23.5 tackles for loss and was second with 12 sacks in his first season at defensive end. He spent his first two Penn State seasons at linebacker. A unanimous first-team All-American, he sustained a shoulder injury against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl, a College Football Playoff quarterfinal.
He returned to play in the Orange Bowl against Notre Dame and had five tackles, including a sack and another tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry. He did not work out for NFL teams as he recovered from the injury, but that hasn’t hurt his draft stock.
Warren and Carter were the second straight set of Penn State teammates to be drafted in the first round and the third pair since 2021. Offensive tackle Olu Fashanu (Jets) and defensive end Chop Robinson (Miami) were first-round picks last year; linebacker Micah Parsons (Dallas) and defensive end Odafe Oweh (Baltimore) went in the first round in 2021.
