Dr. Nirav Shah featured as UMF Commencement speaker

FARMINGTONThe University of Maine at Farmington honored members of the Class of 2025 with a festive Commencement celebration, Saturday, May 10. More than 320 of the 386 graduates, including 293 bachelor’s and 93 master’s graduates, marched at the festivities at UMF’s Dearborn Gym as dedicated faculty and staff, dignitaries and loving families and friends cheered them on.

“Today, the UMF Class of 2025 started the day as students and ended the day as Farmington graduates,” said Joseph McDonnell, UMF president. In his address to the 400 graduates, President McDonnell said, “The lasting effect of a college education is not found in remembering the specific content or course material but the habits of mind the widening of interests, the development of character, and the commitment to continuous learning, open mindedness, and civic engagement that graduates obtain from their university education.”

Dr. Nirav Dinesh Shah, former principal deputy director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and voice and face of the pandemic response in Maine during his time at the Maine CDC, delivered the keynote address to students, their families and honored guests. Jonathan Moody, UMF alumnus and Maine’s 2024 State Superintendent of the Year, received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

Shah is an American epidemiologist, economist and attorney. While in medical school, he worked for the Ministry of Health in Cambodia where his work included outbreak investigation and he aided in the response to the SARS and Avian Influenza outbreaks. Following medical school, Shah worked as a health care attorney and was appointed as the director of the Illinois Dept. of Public Health from 2015 – 2019.

In 2019, he was appointed by Maine Gov. Janet Mills as the director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention where he served as the voice and face of the pandemic response in Maine. In 2023, he was appointed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the principal deputy director, followed by appointment as the acting director.

Throughout his career, Shah has championed critical public health issues including combating the opioid crisis, childhood lead poisoning and reducing maternal and infant mortality. His leadership and communication style are renowned for being centered in both scientific investigation and human compassion. Shah recently returned to Maine to launch a public health education program at Colby College.

Jonathan Moody – UMF Honorary Degree Recipient

Jonathan Moody, UMF alumnus, superintendent for MSAD 54 and Maine’s 2024 Superintendent of the Year was honored as the recipient of an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. A lifelong educator, Moody earned his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Farmington in 1998. During his career, he has served as a coach, tutor, secondary teacher, middle school administrator, high school principal and is currently MSAD 54 Superintendent of schools serving the towns of Skowhegan, Canaan, Mercer, Smithfield, Cornville and Norridgewock.

Under his leadership and in tandem with the district’s partnership with Kennebec Valley Community Action Program (KV-CAP), MSAD 54 envisioned and developed a first-of-its-kind-in-Maine elementary school that will provide early childhood programming for children ages 6 weeks old to three years and comprehensive educational programming to students in Pre-K through grade 5. Additionally, the Margaret Chase Smith Community School will provide technical center early childhood space for high school students and will be a learning lab for professional development as well as the support of pre-service teachers.

In addition to his role as Superintendent of schools, Moody serves on several boards that support the field of education, including the Mitchell Institute, the Redington-Fairview Hospital and the Early Childhood Advisory committee with Educate Maine. He is also a member of the UMF Board of Visitors.

He and his wife Shelly (Maine’s 2011 Teacher of the Year, and Elementary Principal in RSU18) are proud alumni of UMF (’98), where they both were scholar-athletes. Together, they have three children, Jacob, Grace and Olivia.

Senior Speaker and Student Participants

UMF graduating senior, Manu Ritchie, gave the student address. Ritchie graduated with her bachelor’s degree in creative writing and English.

Homeschooled from fifth grade through high school, Ritchie has been passionate about writing from a young age. Her flexible education allowed her to explore a wide range of creative and community-focused interests, including songwriting, volunteering at local food pantries and charities, and earning a black belt in Taekwondo. While in high school, she also got a head start on college through the Early College Program at York County Community College.

Drawn to the close-knit campus and the strength of UMF’s Creative Writing Program, Ritchie thrived in the academic and creative community. In addition to writing realistic fiction and screenplays, she has been an active member of the UMF Honors Program, a Wilson Scholar, and a participant in the Film Club. Her campus involvement also included singing with Strangers Sing a cappella and engaging with the Catholic Campus Ministry.

“Coming to Farmington was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” said Ritchie. “My experience here has allowed me to grow in ways that I didn’t think possible, and I have become self-assured in my own ability to succeed.”

After graduation, Ritchie plans to dedicate a year to her writing before pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing.

The National Anthem was sung by graduating senior Erin Cropper, an Early Childhood Education major from Hampton, N.H.

Jillian Taormina, an Interdisciplinary Studies – Anthropology and Biology major from East Brunswick, N.J. and Kevin Sweeney,  Earth and Environmental Sciences  major from Haverhill, Mass., served as student marshals.

David MacMahon, member of the University of Maine System Board of Trustees, delivered greetings to the graduates.

Joseph McDonnell, UMF president, and Katherine Yardley, co-provost and dean of the College of Education, Health and Rehabilitation, conferred the degrees.
