Cowboys’ Brevyn Spann-Ford is major surprise during Dallas minicamp image

The Dallas Cowboys may have an even more talented tight end room than expected.

Jake Ferguson is the strong incumbent, and Luke Schoonmaker is young with solid ability.

But in minicamp, it's Brevyn Spann-Ford who turned heads, even seeing some run with the first-team offense.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer gave high praise to Spann-Ford, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Nick Harris:

"He had an incredible off-season. He really did. The size alone, he moves really well. I think he added six or seven pounds of lean muscle mass. This guy is not just a run blocker and a pass protector. This guy can be a weapon because of his size in the middle of the field, matched up on linebackers and safeties. The thing I loved about Brev from day one is you knew that this wasn't too big for him. You knew mentally that he knew, 'I belong here. It doesn't matter how I got here, I belong here.' And he's pushing [Jake Ferguson] and [Luke Schoonmaker] and all those guys. He's already made the jump. You asked me how I feel about it, he's already made the jump. He's another guy that when he puts the pads on you're going to see on the field."

Spann-Ford is hard to miss. He's 6-foot-7, 270 pounds.

The Cowboys got him undrafted out of Minnesota. He appeared in all 17 regular season games a year ago, catching nine passes for 88 yards.

It'd be a bit of a surprise to see him usurp Ferguson altogether, but the Cowboys obviously like what they see out of the 25-year old.

Spann-Ford's best season at Minnesota was his penultimate campaign, when in 2022 he had 42 catches for 497 yards.

All told, he had 1,061 receiving yards in his Golden Gophers career.

At his size, Spann-Ford can at least be a red-zone weapon. It'll be interesting to see if he can carry over this offseason momentum as the season approaches.
