Gary Rankin, Bubba Trammell among 10 joining Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame

Ten new members of the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame have been announced. The 37th annual dinner and induction ceremony will take place Aug. 7 at the Knoxville Convention Center.

The guest speaker will be 2012 National League Cy Young Award winner and former Tennessee baseball standout R.A. Dickey. 

Tickets are $150 apiece or a table of 10 for $1,500. Go to www.gkshof.org for more information. The event begins with a hospitality at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 and the induction ceremony at 7:30.

All proceeds benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley, which serves more than 8,300 youth and teens at 15 club locations.

Here are this year's inductees:

Joey Clinkscales

Played football for the Vols from 1982-86 and was captain his senior season. A dual-threat quarterback at Austin-East High School, Clinkscales converted to wide receiver as a freshman.

He caught 68 passes for 1,105 yards and 10 touchdowns during his college career despite playing alongside future first-round NFL draft picks  Anthony Hancock, Willie Gault, Clyde Duncan, Tim McGee and Anthony Miller. 

Clinkscales was selected in the ninth round of the NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played two seasons in the NFL (1987-88), appearing in 14 games for the Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Clinkscales is entering in his seventh season with the Oakland Raiders as director of player personnel.

Buck Coatney

Buck Coatney, Knox County Schools, United Way Loaned Executives  2013.

Served as football coach at Fulton High School from 1992-2010 after serving as defensive coordinator starting in 1987. The Falcons played in five state championship games in a six-year stretch under Coatney, winning Class AAA titles in 2003, 2004 and 2006. He was named PrepXtra Coach of the Year three times.

Coatney played football and baseball for the Falcons. In football he was selected as the recipient of the coveted Tony O’Brien Award and was voted team captain and MVP his senior season.

He played at Furman and was voted team captain and Defensive Player of the Year during his senior season in 1984.

Tony Parrilla

Tony Parrilla

A two-time Olympian for the United States (Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996)  in the 800 meters in track and field.  

Parrilla, who grew up in Panama, graduated from South Dade High School in Miami.

At UT, he won four NCAA titles, more than any other collegian. In 1994, Parrilla won his third straight NCAA title in the 800. He was a 10-time All-American and still holds UT’s school record of 1:43.97.

Gary Rankin

With 410 victories, Rankin is the winningest coach in TSSAA football history. He has led Alcoa High School to nine state championships and 13 overall. 

He has made 10 state championship appearances in 12 years (including five in a row).

Rankin won four state titles at Riverdale and reached the final nine times in 16 seasons at the Murfresboro school.

Saraceni's vision has been that the lessons learned through the game of golf offer a pathway to freedom and a life of independence.

Lisa Savage

Lisa Savage

She has dedicated the past 39 years to building the character and confidence of children through gymnastics in Knoxville.  She has taught more than 15,000 preschool age children, some being second- and third-generation students, as well as hundreds of high-level competitive girls.

The West High School graduate was awarded the Cochran Family McDonald’s Scholarship to the University of Tennessee in 1978. The program was discontinued in 1979.

In 1981 she became the YMCA gymnastics director and afterwards joined Knoxville Gymnastic Club and later was on the ground floor as the Knoxville Gymnastics Training Center was opened in 1989.

Savage is the girls team coach and Excel Program Director at Premier Athletics West. Her husband, Phil Savage, also a gymnastics coach, was inducted into the hall of fame in 2009.

Elliott Stroupe

Elliott Stroupe

He grew up as a member at the Caswell Boys’ Club and later became the physical education director and helped revitalize the sports program.

The club became a force in baseball and basketball not just locally but nationwide. Stroupe coached Junior Pro Basketball national championship teams in 1975 and 1978.

He joined Webb School in 1980 and served as varsity boys basketball coach, middle school basketball coach and middle school tennis coach. As a varsity coach his teams won 105 games in five years reaching the semifinals of the state tournament twice.

In 2012 Stroupe received special recognition for his work with young people at the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.

The gymnasium of the Boys and Girls Club is named in honor of Stroupe as is the gymnasium in the Haslam all-purpose facility at Webb.

Bubba Trammell

trammell.MP#7259   MICHAEL PATRICK/NEWS SENTINEL    Bubba Trammell is working out at Club 180 in West Knoxville. Trammell is a Major League ball player, who left the big leagues because of some personal problem, and he is trying to get back this year with Baltimore.

Played for five teams in his seven-year major league career.

The outfielder hit a pair of home runs in the 2000 World Series as a member of the New York Mets. He hit 82 home runs during his career.

Trammell first played at Cleveland State before starring at Tennessee from 1993-94 with a .368 batting average, 22 home runs and 105 RBIs. 

He was selected in the 11th round of the 1994 draft by the Detroit Tigers.

Trammell helped Central High School win the 1990 state championship with a 31-0 record.

Stanley Underwood

Stanley Underwood

He is approaching his 30th season as a track and field official.

It all started after he responded to a 1990 invitation for the Knoxville Track Club to assist the University of Tennessee hosting the NCAA Cross Country championships.

In 2009, he was inducted into the Knoxville Track Club Hall of Fame and the USATF Officials Hall of Fame.

Chris Vandergriff

Chris Vandergriff

A wrestling coach at Halls High School, he compiled a career dual meet record of 305-229-2 through his retirement in 2006.

Halls was runner-up in the state dual meet championship in 1990.

As a junior at Halls in 1976, he became the first state wrestling champion from the Knoxville area when he won the heavyweight title. In 1977, he was captain of the football team and again won the state heavyweight title.

He attend the University of Tennessee and was a four-year letterman for the wrestling team. In 1978, he placed third in the heavyweight division at the SEC championships.

After graduating UT, he returned as a teacher and coach at Halls in 1981.

In 2007, he was inducted into the Tennessee Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
