NBC 6 Weekend Football Preview: The Rollercoaster Continues

What to Know

  • Last week in the world of football in the state of Florida, it was the best of times and it was the worst of times.

Last week in the world of football in the state of Florida, it was the best of times and it was the worst of times depending on who you are rooting for.

If you are a fan of the Miami Dolphins, you are rejoicing after the team got a win over the rival New York Jets to move back over .500 heading into the second half of the season.

If you are a fan of the three major college football teams in the state – Miami, Florida and Florida State – well, it has been a rough last two weeks that has seen the teams lose each time….something that only took place three times total over the previous 40 seasons.

Well, the calendar has been turned and each team heads into the second weekend of November wondering if they can turn around their fortunes the remainder of the season – and we’re here to let you know how the games rank with our NBC 6 not-so-scientific system.

Don’t look now, but a team that has lost four of their last six games is still in the conversation for a playoff spot at this point – but the Dolphins will go into their fifth straight game without the services of Ryan Tannehill as quarterback. Brock Osweiller has a .500 record in his absence, but playing the Packers and Aaron Rodgers inside Lambeau Field is going to be a little tougher than the Jets and Chicago Bears at home.

Ever since coming back to beat rival Florida State at home, the ‘Canes have lost three straight and scored less than 40 points combined in those games. N’Kosi Perry, who led that comeback win before being benched the following week against Virginia, is back in as starting quarterback while some in orange and green have to wonder if another loss might be the final straw on the season and lead to some serious conversations about head coach Mark Richt three seasons in.

With three games left, head coach Butch Davis’ team is just three wins away from doing something the program has ever done – make it to the championship game for Conference USA. Despite losing last week big to rival FAU, the Panthers at least know they will be bowling for the second straight season for the first time in program history.

When the season first started, many thought this could be a game that would decide a spot in the College Football Playoff – now, the Seminoles limp in needed two wins in their final three games just to avoid their first losing season since 1976.

It won’t be easy against the No. 3 team in the country, even though Notre Dame will be without starting quarterback Ian Book due to a rib injury.

Just two weeks ago, the orange and blue were riding high as they looked to go from a losing season to the SEC title game. Two weeks later, head coach Dan Mullen’s team is desperate to break their recent slide as they welcome a former Florida coach, Will Muschamp, back for a game that will have plenty of bowl implications at this point.

Other State Games

The undefeated UCF Knights will look to stay that way when they face the Navy Midshipmen while the USF Bulls are on the road taking on the Cincinnati Bearcats and the FAU Owls host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

The FAMU Rattlers will host South Carolina State in their final home game before next week’s Florida Classic against rival Bethune-Cookman, who beat North Carolina Central on Thursday night.

In the pro game, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are back home to take on Washington while the Jacksonville Jaguars are on the road to take on the Indianapolis Colts.
