  • Fortnite players resurrected convicted murderer armed with gun in new avatar
  • Controversial players Aaron Hernandez, OJ Simpson and Colin Kaepernick used
  • OJ Simpson character created to play popular shoot'em-up game and kill players
  • Other NFL players pictured with bag of fireworks strapped to backs in Fortnite

Gamers have created an online character of a famous NFL murderer to go on a virtual killing spree and slaughter other players.

Fortnite players resurrected former New England Patriots player, Aaron Hernandez, armed with a handgun in an online avatar to go on rampages.

The hugely popular shoot'em-up game allowed players to mock-up NFL players last week, when a new range of skins were released.

The game allows players who buy the jersey and choose a number to put on the back of a character, then arm the character with an arsenal of weapons.

But some gamers took the opportunity to recreate some of the game's most notorious players, including Hernandez and even OJ Simpson.

Former New England Patriots player, Aaron Hernandez, who was found guilty of murdering Odin Lloyd in 2013 before committing suicide in prison, was resurrected as a Fortnite character armed with a gun

One player created Hernandez, the former Patriots tight end who was found guilty of murdering Odin Lloyd in 2013 before committing suicide in prison.

A Twitter user wrote alongside a picture of the Hernandez character: 'Thanks to @FortniteGame, Aaron Hernandez lives on.'

Other players made virtual versions of controversial players such as running back, OJ Simpson, who was charged with the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in 1994.

He was acquitted but a judge awarded their families $33.5 million in a ruling against him for their wrongful deaths, before being jailed for robbery an kidnapping in 2007.

A Twitter user appeared to make the Simpson player and wrote in a caption alongside a picture of the avatar: 'OJ Simpson skin so I can murder these opponents and try to get away with the W!'

Another user wrote: 'OJ and Aaron Hernandez in Fortnite...What a deadly combo!'

Some gamers created the avatar of more politically outspoken, Colin Kaepernick, taking a knee in protest during the game.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback sparked controversy in 2016 when he kneeled during the national anthem to protest police brutality cases and racial injustice in the US.

Wide Receiver Plaxico Burress, who shot himself with a handgun and Jason Pierre-Paul who blew off some fingers during a fireworks stunt, were also chosen as avatars by online players.

A Jason Pierre-Paul character was pictured in the game with a bag of fireworks wrapped around his back.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman is infamously known for blowing off some of his fingers during a July 4, 2015, fireworks incident when he was playing for the New York Giants.

Quaterback Michael Vick, who while with the Atlanta Falcons pleaded guilty to his part in a dog fighting ring in 2007 and spent 21 months in federal prison, was also chosen as a character in the game.

It's unclear if creator Epic Games would prevent players from creating certain controversial avatars.
